We have been in our usual "gardening frenzy" since the end of April, but more so than ever since Mim will be away for a few weeks. We began with our favorite germination experiment indoors...bean sprouting in a big jar. We planted peas, which are growing nicely. Children have composted, sifted soil, added organic matter, raked, hoed and planted. OUR BEAN There is an embryo inside.
"The first thing I had was a little root..."

Noah plants those Kentucky Wonder beans.
Thomas can do it.
Townes is mulching the asparagus.
Addie plants a red onion. The children love to pluck them from the patch, and eat them on the spot.
Ben and Divit enjoying the beautiful weather...water play on the porch
Simon and Char We have been working right along amid all this gardening. Kindergarten children have finished Little House books, and have studied pit vipers including our own Massasauga rattler. We promised at the beginning of the year that we would plant a prairie, and by golly we did! Grand Prairie Friends helped with plant selection, and we did the work. Someday soon, our prairie will be just wonderful. We are so proud of it. We have Indian grass, bottlebrush, big and little bluestems, Canadian wild rye, compass plant, wild quinine, rosin weed, golden rod, aster, bee balm, butterfly weed, butterfly milkweed, spiderwort and rattlesnake master, just to name a few varieties.
Children readying themselves to dig in 75 plants...
Ben's favorite: rattlesnake master (Of course the k's are hoping we get rattlers...birds and other small prairie creatures would be just fine with us!) To make a prairie it takes a clover Graduating students have been taking achievement tests, competing with number roll and building birdhouses.
