After a visit from two Montessori teachers from a Champaign Montessori School, we gained a new appreciation for our wonderful group of children. The teachers commented on the self-direction that our children show, and importantly, how extremely kind and helpful they were to each other. It's true! Our children are a joy to observe! Someday we must install a large viewing window for parents! We are also enjoying seeing that wonderful sense of industry that children who have been here for the endurance exhibit. Townes and Sarah and Ben are doing such interesting things. If you were watching you might see... Townes flipping through National Geographic to cut photos for his Timeline of Life book. He is particularly interested in bacteria, and now is able to look at our new slides of bacteria that we ordered for the new microscope. After this, he might do some sketches of the bacteria in his journal. He is also enjoying the new notation material (Annual Fund...thanks everyone!) and is learning about clefs and chromatic scales.) The other day he said, "Well do I still have to do my math, Mim, because after this music I did, it feels like I was doing math in my head!" (That's a pretty accurate assessment from such a young child!!!) Ben composing a song with the wooden notational set, matching notes, lines and spaces to the scale. We heard the same four notes the other morning about a hundred zillion times...He said the lyrics go something like..."It's the best day ever, it's the best day 'eh-eh-vah.'" His artwork has advanced tremendously, and he loves to subtract big numbers with the stamp game. Then he's on to baking steamed custard for his friends. We put the ramekins into a "Bain Marie," or water bath.
Sarah has been working at a weaving project for a few weeks. She is often heard singing in her lovely voice as she works, maybe in English, maybe in German. She enjoys helping Mim begin on the proper notes at singing time, and often copies the operas we listen to in order to see if she can sing those notes. She certainly can!!! She has been working with biomes and the map of North America. She is working at exchanging when she adds big numbers. She is in charge of the Roman calendar and often helps and gives lessons to younger children. What enormous potential all of our children have!!!
Addie is cutting slices of banana for her friends.
Garett working at the binomial cube
Jaden is trying to match a bell's sound to the control bells.
