We welcomed our new month of March, and Annie did the honors on our Roman calendar. She moved the brass peg from II to III. On March the 2nd it was the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss. We celebrated all week long with his stories. Kindergarten children are reading the stories themselves!
Ben has gathered an audience for Green Eggs and Ham. We have added soap grating and whipping to practical life. Grate the bar of soap. The grater is a little bit sharp, so we have to be careful. Use the paint brush to sweep the soap shavings into the container. Later, we can take the soap whipping work and make bubbles that look like whipped cream. (Concentration, task-completion and fun)
Jaden is grating soap. Older children have been working with clocks, fractions and equivalents, in addition to their other daily math work. We are still enjoying the Wilder books, and this week children laughed so hard when grandpa accidentally catches the pig when he is sledding down hill. We have added Little House in the Big Woods paper dolls to language. Wonderful stories are being created. Once we heard, "C'mon now let's get in the car!" Then a pause, and..."Oops!" "C'mon then let's get in the sleigh!"
Simon had a lesson with making toast. MIM: "Are you four?" (a prerequisite for this work...) SIMON: "Well...I have tall legs!"
John and Jackson sharing cinnamon toast prepared by Jackson. Lots of boxelder bugs hatched outside our sliding door. They are coming in to see us. We know they are boxelder because we looked at photos of maple bugs and boxelder bugs. We compared the two. Ours are definitely boxelder. We all decided that. They look similar, but our bugs are boxelder! Recently we celebrated Chinese New Year. Today Miss Heather came and presented some Korean Lunar New Year traditions. First she told us all about her friend Sung Ok Park. Sung was an exchange student when Heather was in high school. Now Sung teaches kindergarten children how to speak English. Sung sent these wonderful things to Heather so that she could teach children a bit about Korea. First Miss Heather read us a wonderful book about Korean children preparing for the celebration of the Lunar New Year. This is the most important holiday of the year in Korea. Children stay up all night to bring luck to the family. In the morning, everyone eats a special bowl of rice cake soup. Everyone becomes one year older after eating the soup. Children give a special bow (Se-bae) to their elders. Then their elders give them lucky money. Miss Heather gave us a beautiful Korean pouch from Sung for our Asian culture box. Someday we will put in some lucky money. The New Year is a time to honor ancestors and elders and for new beginnings!
Heather prepares to don the crimson silk skirt. (Chima)
Heather usually twists all of her hair up into a bun, but she wore it in a braid today because in Korea, young women wear a braid until they are married. Just like in the story, she slid one arm at a time into the short silk jacket. (Jeogori) Next she put on the flower shoes, (Kkotsin), then the charm, (Norigae) and the hat and the handbag. The children were in awe! How beautiful Heather! |
