WEEK OF FEBRUARY 19

We started our week off with a discussion of Chinese New Year. It's the Year of the Pig! Older children crafted some very sparkly, red Chinese lanterns in honor of the occasion.

Our song, THE EEL

"I'm the eel, slippery to the feel, Some folks think I make a fabulous meal.

So I must beware, I must look, I must stay away from the fisherman's hook.

Eel, eel, eel, that's my name. My slipperiness is my claim to fame."

(The last line of this song is all chromatic...very tricky to sing, but we are getting to be soooo good at it!)

Mim's friends went to Thailand. They brought us a picture of a basket of eels which were for sale at the market. Eels for lunch?

We looked at this photo and researched eels in our animal books. We really like the garden eels and the gulper eel.

Josie is discoving volcanoes.

Some boys have a chat about puzzles.

Sarah has been writing many books lately.

TOWNES IS SIX YEARS-OLD!

Townes' mommy showed photos and told us about Townes.

Some things he likes: sausage, basil, Myth Busters, science.

Townes walks around the sun six times.

We enjoyed oatmeal cookies with Townes and his mom.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TOWNES! WE LOVE YOU!!!

LOOK, I can cut semi circles...Alex

Jaden is intent on drawing.

Noah completed the horizontal layout.

THEN it was Tommy's birthday! Tommy's mommy told us all about Tommy. We even saw a picture of his very first haircut at Barber Bruce's!

Anita made delicious blueberry ice cream and it was purple. We would love the recipe!

Tommy presented our class with a beautiful new book. Thank you!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, THOMAS! WE LOVE YOU!!!

Sarah has been working on a booklet of bird groups. She just completed a huddle of penguins. Julia has worked hard at the tying frame. Townes has begun the tropical forest biome. Ben completed his human anatomy project. Simon has been matching out his map of the world. Benjamin has been grading colors from darkest to lightest. Several of the younger children are intent on learning the names of our seashells.

Things we hear...Simon said to Garett: "Hey that's the 'owie' shell." (cowrie)

Tigerlilly reading from the vowel tree

Annie and fingerpaint

Addie Mae is matching the Jack Russell terriers.

Ben is mixing ink with the special calligraphy brush. He is painting chinese numerals.

Most favorite game right now is identifying bird calls. Teacher plays the call, and children call out which bird. Some of the children can distinguish them all. They love the cardinal, chickadee, and eastern towhee. ("drink your tea, drink your tea") Jaden called out, "That's the deerkiller." (killdeer)

The following is a great bird site to share with your children. Click Listen:

THEN it was Sarah's birthday. Sarah's daddy told us her story, and we looked at her photos. Sarah loves to play the violin, and oh, how she loves to sing. She teaches us beautiful songs in german often, and she sings great lullabies too. Sarah brought cookies for her friends that she made at home.

Sarah takes six spins around the sun.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SARAH! WE LOVE YOU!!!

Older group is continuing with our Laura Ingalls Wilder chapter books. This week we made homemade yeast rolls with homemade butter from our book of her recipes. We colored our butter with carrots cooked in milk. We boiled the carrots in the milk, and then added the colored milk to our cream. We made our butter by shaking the cream in a jar for a long time. We enjoyed our rolls and butter during Friday tea time.

We took turns passing the jar of cream and agitating it as hard as we could.

Townes: "I feel that butter banging..."

We tried to whip cream into butter, but that was really hard. Shaking worked better. Grace is spinning the whisk in the cream.

Simon works to set the blocks of the roman arch around the template.
